I am an Obstetrics & Gynaecology registrar in Bristol, UK and I am undertaking research into the potential role of the Internet to support postgraduate training for Specialist Registrars (Interns) in the UK. One aspect of this will be the investigation of the potential role of the Internet to canvass opinion from O&G professionals world-wide in order to develop a consensus opinion for the management of O&G disorders. This consensus view can then be used for the production of standardised learning materials. We will compare opinions provided by members of Obstetrics and Gynaecology mailing lists submitted using an on-line form with a number of subject experts. We will publish the results through OB-GYN L to help other interested parties and researchers. We have decided to use the management of Eclampsia as an experimental model; because the Confidential Enquiry into Maternal Death found that 80% of maternal deaths were due to substandard care and identified a number of important areas for improvement. Some management principles have been enshrined by Randomised Controlled Trials but others are more contentious and rely on consensus opinion.
