Breast cancer patients being treated with the drug tamoxifen may also get some protection from fatal coronary heart disease, according to a study. Tamoxifen, sometimes prescribed to women after breast cancer surgery to prevent a recurrence, also works to inhibit lethal heart disease including heart attacks, researchers reported in Wednesday's Journal of the National Cancer Institute. In the study, 2,885 women with early stage breast cancer were given either five years of tamoxifen therapy or a placebo. Overall, the average annual death rate from heart disease was lower for those who took tamoxifen, but researchers said it was not statistically significant. However, the study's authors said the findings were consistent with other studies on tamoxifen, and stressed further studies were needed.
