Double Reading of Mammograms Increases Cancer Detection Rate ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

---------------------------------------------------------------------------- SEATTLE (Reuters Health) May 04 - Routine double reading of mammograms may help improve the accuracy and sensitivity of the screening, according to study results presented Thursday at the 101st annual meeting of the American Roentgen Ray Society.

Dr. Susan Harvey presented data on the initial experience of independent double readings at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, Vermont. The second reading is rapid, she explained to conference attendees. "It takes between 30 seconds to a minute per case, depending on the case and the radiologist. The second reader in this method can add but not delete recalls."

During the study period, 25,368 mammograms were reviewed. The total recall rate was 14% or 3588 women. The first reader was responsible for 3209 of the recalls and the second reader added 379. Of the women recalled, 676 were biopsied. The first reader initiated 634 of the biopsies, and second reader was responsible for 42.

The biopsy results showed a total of 139 malignancies, of which 11 were in women recalled by the second reader. Dr. Harvey said that the increased cancer detection rate was 7.9%.

The expenses generated by the second reading and additional imaging, biopsies and pathology totaled $111,000. This amounts to about $10,000 per additional cancer detected, Dr. Harvey pointed out.

"Our recall rate was increased by 1.5%, and our current second read has been modified," she told meeting attendees. "We are now doing a consensus double reading because of this data, and in an effort to decrease our recall rate and cost."
