WESTPORT, CT (Reuters Health) Jan 15 - Total cholesterol levels in adolescent users of oral contraceptives appear to be significantly higher than in comparable nonusers, Belgian researchers report.

Dr. Dominique Paulus and colleagues, from the Interuniversity Association for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention in Brussels, note that little is known about the health effects of oral contraceptives during adolescence.

To investigate possible cardiovascular risk factors, the researchers surveyed secondary school students aged 12 to 17 years. In addition, anthropomorphic measurements were made and blood pressure and total cholesterol levels were established.

A total of 652 of 784 girls studied had passed menarche. Of these, 92 (14%) were oral contraceptive users and ages ranged from 14 to 17 years. Only three (2%) of the 14-year-olds were users, versus 47 (34%) of the 17-year-olds.

Blood pressure and body mass index were similar in users and nonusers. However, the mean total cholesterol level in users (191 mg/dL) was significantly higher than that in nonusers (172 mg/dL), the research team reports in the current issue of Contraception, dated September.

Regression analysis confirmed that oral contraceptive use was significantly associated with a high cholesterol level (odds ratio 3.08). In addition, a total of 39% of oral contraceptive users were smokers versus 20% of nonusers.

Given the possible cardiovascular consequences, the researchers suggest that physicians should "be aware of this association when they prescribe oral contraceptives to adolescents." They also call for preventive action against "the combined use of oral contraceptives and smoking in teenagers."
