Re: Eggs for auction.

Several important points for distinction between egg and sperm donation: ...ejaculation through mastrubation is quick, easy, painless, and without medical complications (ie.: risk to donor's health and well being); ...egg harvesting involves complicated drug regimen, of somewhat uncertain long term effect, with potential short term complications, ranging from pain, discomfort and inconvenience all the way to death (yes, there are repoerted deaths from egg retrieval)

Thus while giving eggs or sperm is conceptually not different, from the practical standpoint they are a world apart, and thus should not be considered equal.

As to spreading your gametes across the world, the indiscriminate dispersion of either sperm or eggs is of similar nature - ill conceived (no pun intended). No question that judicious donation to needy couples is quite acceptable and beneficial, but, as in sperm donation, one should limit egg donation to few times only, and considering the possible ill effect to the egg donor, such donation should be rare and for the most unusual and needy causes. And the donor needs to be well acquainted with the rigors and dangers of donation, and the recipient needs to understand the vagaries of genetics - the benefits are just not what they are cracked up to be. (two brilliant people can have a stupid baby, two gorgeous parents can have an ugly offspring). No guarantees.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
