Any harm in skipping OCP placebos?

I am an NP student with a specialty in women's health at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. As part of a research project I am investigating why women feel that it is necessary to menstruate each month and because of this d/c Depo when they experience amenorrhea or believe it is unsafe or "unnatural" to skip their placebo pills while taking OCPs to avoid menstruating any given month. I have heard many clinicians state that there are no safety issues associated with not menstruating while on Depo or when skipping placebo pills even for numerous cycles on end. However, I am having a difficult time finding literature/evidence to back this practice up and if anyone could point me in the right direction I would really appreciate it.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
