Glaxo Wellcome Inc. cares about your health and your wellbeing. As part of our mission, we are providing you with information on genital herpes, suppressing genital herpes, and sexually transmitted diseases. Also we would like to offer you a coupon for a free trial of VALTREX® (valacyclovir HCl) Caplets to help you suppress or treat genital herpes outbreaks. Offer good only for US residents and is subject to the eligibility requirements stated on the coupon. VALTREX is available only by prescription.

Ask your doctor or healthcare provider if VALTREX is right for you.

VALTREX is indicated for the treatment or suppression of genital herpes. VALTREX is intended for adults with normal immune systems. If your immune system is not normal because of advanced HIV disease, bone marrow transplant, or kidney transplant, make sure your doctor knows this to avoid a potentially serious complication.

No drug has been proven to prevent the spread of herpes infection to others. There is no cure for genital herpes.

In studies with VALTREX the most commonly reported adverse events were headache, nausea, and abdominal pain.

In a large clinical study of suppressive therapy for genital herpes, which included over 1400 patients, VALTREX was proven effective in suppressing genital herpes outbreaks. In those patients, who experienced a high frequency of outbreaks (6 or more per year) prior to entering this study, over half of the patients (55%) did not have a single outbreak for 6 months while taking one 1000 mg VALTREX Caplet once-a-day, every day, while only 7% of those taking placebo (sugar pill) did not have an outbreak in 6 months. At the end of a year, one third of these patients taking VALTREX still had not had a single outbreak compared to only 4% of those taking placebo (sugar pill). Patients with nine or fewer outbreaks showed comparable results with VALTREX 500 mg once daily. There are no data on the safety or effectiveness of suppressive therapy of more than 1 year's duration.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
