Re: IUD and PID

I am wrong if I stated that a nurse practitioner is totally inept in the practice of medicine (which I have never said!). I believe NP's and PA's, etc., should always practice in collaboration with a physician, and not independent of physicians.

You obviously have your reasons for liberally defending NP's, etc. Maybe you use them to see patients, etc--as I also do! But, again I believe they should not be independent of physicians in the scope of practicing medicine.

I certainly am not feeling belittled or threatened by your "bets" or statements. Again, to answer your question directly, NP's, etc., certainly CAN "master" IUD placement. But, the practice of medicine, as a whole, is best mastered by a physician, who has been trained by countless hours of medical school and especially Residency. No non physician training program even closely matches the hours and training physicians experience during an OB/GYN residency. Practicing medicine is what physicians are trained to do. A monkey can master a task. I believe that the use of IUD's must take into account the entire person--their history, current practices, etc. NP's, etc., (non physicians) are certainly capable of eliciting a history from a patient. As I have stated, though, I believe that if it is not a straightforward case, a physician should be consulted. If you are of the opinion that NP's and other non physicians are capable of practicing medicine INDEPENDENT of physicians, then you will definitely see a drop in the overall quality of delivering medical care to patients. That is my opinion. I wish you would accept my opinion as simply being MY opinion, and not the law. I will never allow you or anyone to push your beliefs down my throat as law, as I would never think of pushing my beliefs onto others. 1st amendment........

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
