In search of FGM knowledgeable health providersFrom: Jai J. Noire (Director@fgm.org)Fri May 28 04:21:52 1999
The FGM Network and Message Board http://www.fgm.org , based in Oakland, California, is searching for qualified, culturally sensitive, health providers experienced in issues of female genital mutilation to add to our list of physicians and consultants. We are concerned that treatment information regarding this issue does not seem to be quickly filtering down to rank and file health providers practicing in situations where the majority of immigrant women are likely to seek treatment (county hospitals, women's clinics.) For this reason, as well as fear of insensitive care, FGM affected women and girls often avoid health care. The FGMNMB is also soliciting articles on treatment protocols and/or case studies. Articles we presently provide, include the Royal Australian College of Ob/Gyn's protocol, Dr. Jean Fourcroy's Curbside Consult, articles from the African Well Woman Clinic in London, and Proceedings of the Expert Meeting on FGM, Ghent-Belgium Nov. 5-7, 1998. The aim of the FGMNMB is to eventually found a clinic, similar to the African Well Woman Clinic in London, in the Oakland, CA area. Recently we have founded African Men United Against Female Circumcision. These men will act as community leaders, educators and crisis intervention leaders. We are seeing more young women-- some still high school students-- suffering serious side effects from their FGM. Many, due to family dynamics, must seek treatment discreetly. They are forced to choose between their immediate health and "family honor." Any health providers willing to provide treatment to affected women and girls, or who wish to contribute articles or suggestions, should contact: (Ms.) Jai Noire, Director@fgm.org FGM Network and Message Board 3706 Hillview Street #A Oakland, CA 94602-3333 (510)531-5373 Tel (510)531-9568 Fax

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
