Re: Advice on normal serum AFP, elevated amniotic fluid AFP?From: Braun, R. Daniel (rbraun@iupui.edu)Fri Mar 26 07:10:04 1999
Now we have a series of 4 pregnancies in two women. Since both our patients had it happen in two successive pregnancies, it makes you wonder is this an inherited or genetic trait of some kind.?????????????? Dan R. >How would you manage a patient with a normal triple I had the same problem in 2 successives pregnancies for the SAME patient. Elevated AFP in amniotic fluid without any blood contamination. Amniocentesis done for maternal age (37 for the 1st pregnancy and 39 for the 2nd). Evaluation in a tertiary center was absolutely negative. First vaginal delivery at 36 weeks (premature labor): normal male 7#14oz...big for age. Healthy at 2½ y.o. Second vaginal delivery at 38 weeks on 99-03-24: normal female 9#5oz. Gestational diabetes on 3rd trimester tx with insulin QID. The baby seems normal but only 2 days old! No other anomaly with the 2 pregnancies. I think you can re-assure your patient. Incidentally, the consultant in the tertiary center and the genetist had no explanation for this disturbing 'curiosity' Hope this will help. Tony Blair md ( not the UK - PM ! ) Ob/Gyn Canada
