Re: [Fwd: Fw: An Important Message] - CA-125From: Thomas Ind (ThomasInd@compuserve.com)Mon Dec 7 23:14:15 1998
I coudln't agree more (especially as Judith our genetic counsellor is sitting behind me). I think you sumed it up correctly. There is a randomised controlled trial of CA125 for ovarian cancer screening occurring in London. An original observational study of over 22,000 women has been published. We are re-looking at this data with respect to benign diseases and life analysis. Two papers are going to be published early next year (one in cancer and one in gynaeonc). The important thing to remember is the positive predictive value of CA125. As any screening test is likely to result in laparotomy, then anything less than 10% is unacceptable (that is one cancer for 10 laparotomies). Many may feel that it should be even higher. The PPV for CA125 is a tenth of this. Furthermore, given a positive result, breast cancer, other cancers, fibroids, benign cysts and endometriosis are all more likely.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
