Re: Gyn: OCPsFrom: Terrence.Jones@ncal.kaiperm.orgFri Aug 28 16:07:04 1998
Gail, does the current issue of selected readings on DVT/PE prophylaxis mention anything on 'lepirudin'? As You'd mentioned, if on oral coagulant, OCP's are unlikely to pose risk (Comp&Zacur AJOG 6/93, 168:1990-93 {see blurb on bottom rt. on pg 1992 -> OC's might in fact reduce menorrhagia, along with - as Dr. Grimes mentions at times, when not scaring Joe TM with IUD data - hemoperitoneum assoc with ovulation.} This article appears in a supplement titled "Contraceptive Choices for Women with Medical Problems", from a symposium Co-chaired By Drs. Grimes/Mishell/&Speroff. Dr G's last 2 sentences in the first paragraph of his intro echoes the above sentiment.) Don't know of any recent studies specifically addressing the postop ortho Pt. on OC's & coumadin. If following INR, should be able to compensate for any peri-op changes in F VII? Spose there might be some concern re: protein C depletion in those with this mechanism for thrombophilia? tj.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
