If asked, I have always erred on the side of caution and recommended stopping OCs when surgery would result in immobilization of the leg, or prolonged immobilization of the patient. Same w/ broken leg. I've been flabbergasted at the patients who have had total hip and total knee replacement and whose orthopedists have continued them on OCPs. (Have put them on Coumadin, however).

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
