Re: abdominoplasty

Well ... The one patient I did who had this done had it done by one of our gen surgeins. I assissted him with it at the end of the hyst through pfannenstiel. It removed only 2 1/2 pounds or 1 kg, left a very long abdominal scar and moved the umbilicus half way to the symphysis (she declined the centering of the umbilicus...) and significantly increased the surgical / anesthesia time. On top of that - she had not given her history of a sister dying of pulmonary embolus after childbirth and her father having a non-fatal PE post op until we were making her diagnosis of PE in the ER a week post-op. So ... although I am certain I could do a good job of the abdominoplasty - I prefer to not do it. The patients who ask me for it ask more for weight loss than for just the flappy skin... If you do the TAHBSO through a Pfannenstiel, it's extremely easy to do a subumbilical abdominoplasty, and remove the redundant skin left over from childbearing (which is NOT amenable to exercise and weight reduction).

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
