Jane,

This maneuver has been described in 1860. It is a lowering of the posterior arm . To pull down the arm you need to grasp the corresponding hand in the pelvis following the sacrum on the ventral side of the fetus. If the extraction is impossible a 180° rotation of the fetus is done (Varnier maneuver) so that this posterior arm becomes anterior and the same maneuver is done too with this new posterior arm.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
