Re: Compounded prostaglandin gel for cervical ripeningFrom: Luis Sanchez-Ramos (sanchez-ramos@worldnet.att.net)Sat May 30 11:45:41 1998
We published the results of our study: "Preinduction cervical ripening with commercially available prostaglandin E2 gel: A randomized, double-blind comparison with a hospital-compounded preparation" in Am J Obstet Gynecol 1995;173. We concluded that the two PGE2 formulations appeared equivalent with respect to efficacy. We did find, however, an unexplained higher cesarean rate with the use of the compounded preparation. Of course, for the past few years, we have exclusively used misoprostol for cervical ripening and labor induction. Another study (comparing Prepidil to a hospital compounded PGE2 preparation) was published, I believe in the Am JObstet Gynecol or Obstet Gynecol and reached similar conclusions. We have compared the use of intravaginal misoprostol with the PGE2 hospital-compounded product, with Cervidil, and with Prepidil. Misoprostol has always shown superior efficacy and equal safety.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
