As a midwife providing care for women at home I can respond. You would have had a telephone call to alert you to the problem and allow time for the operating room and anesthesia to be prepared. We would tranport via ambulance. The woman would have been treated with IV crytalloids, oxytocin, IM ergometrine,O2 by FM 100 FIO2. Bimanual compression would be performed by the midwife until the uterus contracted or until transfer to your care.

We know this can happen and the women are informed of this and the resources available. However most recently in Ontario, women have died in HOSPITAL from substandard care. As happens in the UK- see their triennial Maternal Mortality Reports.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
