In a message dated 5/22/98 3:42:14 AM, you wrote: <<I want your advice about a patient. The rush( VZV lesions) started at 28/4/98 before discover she was pregnant and finished at 10/5/98. Is the baby at high risk for congenital malformations? How i can manage this pregnancy? Terminate the pregnancy is the most appropriate treatment?.>> According to the literature, the risk of fetal varicella syndrome (with limb anomalies, etc) is about 2-3% when infection occurs before 20 weeks. However, at just 5 weeks and already ill, I would think you have a fair chance of the "all or none" phenomenon. If the baby is ultrasonographically normal by 10-12 weeks, I would think you'd be out of the woods. Joe P.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
