It is far better not to catheterise as it makes the operation easier and I believe safer. Of course you can do the operation with the bladder empty and indeed that was what I was taught to do many moons ago. Some might argue that it is easier to pop an inflated balloon or that a distended bladder hinders visualization anteriorly... I have always decompressed the bladder and have not had any of the trouble you describe. A bladder with urine in it does not get in the way as it lifts out of the pelvis to become an abdominal organ as it fills up. Try it and you will be converted.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education.
