Art: You are probably correct; however, the standard of practice as elucidated by ACOG and the ACMG is to offer a mid-trimester serum AFP screen for NTDs. It's also much cheaper than a scan in most parts of the US and generally easier to accomplish.

Once a reliable first trimester serum or urine screen for NTDs is developed, the trend will unquestionably be towards first trimester screening for both DS and NTD.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
