Hi,

*** Mysterious pregnancy factor blocks HIV, study finds

<<An unidentified chemical produced by pregnant women appears to help block infection by the HIV virus that causes AIDS, researchers said Monday. Dr. Robert Gallo of the Institute of Human Virology in Baltimore said he and colleagues were backing away from a previous theory it was the pregnancy hormone human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG). They said an unknown but associated chemical was responsible instead. They dubbed this mysterious element "hCG associated factor" or HAF. Gallo first found the pregnancy effects on HIV in 1995, when he and his team accidentally left male and female lab mice in the same cages. They found females that became pregnant seemed to resist Kaposi's sarcoma, a form of cancer associated with AIDS. See http://www.infobeat.com/stories/cgi/story.cgi?id=2553550483-d4d >>

Just a thought - in pregnancy certain amount of immuno-deficiency is present! Won't HIV be exaggerated in pregnancy.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
