Re: Screening for Ovarian CancerFrom: ENDODOK (ENDODOK@aol.com)Sat Mar 28 10:25:51 1998
By the time a Ca125 or an ultrasound are "positive", the patient has the disease. At laparotomy, about 66% will be stage 3, with mets throughout the abdomen. The 5 year survival for this deadly cancer is 15-25%. Why not offer the first degree relative prophylactic laparoscopic oophorectomy-- a 20 minute operation that will reduce her risk from about 4%( a single first degree relative) or from 50% ( two or more first degree relatives) to less than 1%. The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
