With respect I don't agree. In the last year I have dealt with three women who have been victims of ritual genital mutiliation in the Horn of Africa (circumscision is an inaccurate euphemism). I hade seen a few before that. I facilely assumed that all my five colleagues had similarly had one from time to time - when I had my third this year I asked them how many they'd seen (we have a few Somalians at out local university), each of them was disbeleiving that I had seen "so many" they'd never seen a single case. I think it's naive to assume that ob/gyns have a monopoly on this and that as this group of women are more likely to avoid ob/gyns or male professionals generally it may well be that other professionals may have more experience. I didn't immediately step in a volunteer my advice - based largely on experience of revising the vulva in non-pregnant young women seeking help with the sanitary needs of normal periods or being able to approach sex with a relatively normal set of "equipment". My feeling would be towards an individual intuitive approach to each woman. I have grave concerns about the possibility of being asked to reconstruct the "circumision" after childbirth.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
