Just checking in on the web archives. Interesting multifilament thread, chaps - If you had done the ultrasound in the first place to confirm correct IUD placement, you wouldn't now have to debate whether to listen to the fetal heart, no? ;-)

I did actually suggest that a scan be an integral part of an IUD insertion procedure (Br J Obstet Gynaecol 1996;103:574-6). Its the equivalent of inspecting correct placement of the clips after application at lap. steri. I suspect that many IUD failures were incorrect insertions, as they tend to occur early. A typical scenario is that the uterus is acutely anteverted / anteflexed and the doc was afraid to go too high to avoid a perf.

As for hearing the fetal heart, for most mothers it's the highlight of their antenatal visit.

Cheers all - Jason

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
