Cesarean Rates in South Florida

For several years, Hialeah hospital led the country with the highest cesarean rate. Since then, due to several audits by the AHCA they have made an effort to reduce their extremely high rate. I do not have the most recent stats, but I believe they are no longer the leaders. The rate is certainly < 50% ! As for the reason for the high cesarean rates at this hospital, I have heard many, but I had not heard the one about wealthy South American women coming to Hialeah hospital and undergoing a cesarean to protect their perineum. Why would they do that ? They can have the same procedure in their home countries. Wealthy South American women who require medical attention in this country do not seek out a small hospital such as Hialeah. They prefer University Institutions, or Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic etc. Why would they go to Hialeah hospital? The real reason for the high rates is the same that exists in many Latin American countries and many US hospitals: PHYSICIAN CONVENIENCE. By the way, our hospital (teaching institution: University Medical Center in Jacksonville, FL) has the lowest cesarean rate in the state of Florida and one of the lowest in the USA. Our total cs rate has been as low as 8.2%

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
