No one has claimed that any particular tocolytic is devoid of adverse effects. MgSO4 has been associated with problems, especially when used inappropriately. For that very reason any tocolytic should be used carefully and only when indicated. It is not I that doubt the efficacy of tocolytics, the data show no benefit. Anecdotal experience is not a substitute for well-designed clinical trials. In order for the FDA to approve the use of terbutaline as a tocolytic, properly designed and completed clinical trials need to prove its efficacy and lack of adverse effects. That is why the FDA is urging the company to seek approval. I think this does make SCIENTIFIC sense.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
