Pap smears: Why are we changing??

Our pathology department informed us they will be switching to the new "Thin Prep" for evaluation of the pap smears.

They were not sure if going to this screen would allow us to reduce the number of colposcopies that are done for ASCUS and LSIL.

I still have not figure out why we should replace the traditional pap smear a screen that costs an additional $20 more. With 50 million paps done annually in the US we are looking at about 1 billion dollars in cost to attempt to save the 14000 women who develop cervical cancer each year????

I must be missing something in my logic and look forward to some of my colleagues correcting me.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
