Densitometry: When and When and How often??

Anyone familiar with information in the literature about whether or not "routine" DEXA scans are being recommended for the post menopausal patient???

I have ordered only a handful in the past 5 years, but now I am starting to think that with the introduction of drugs such as Fosamax that knowing a patients bone density and rate of degeneration might make a difference in whether or not I prescribe it and what dose that I use.

Please share your thoughts..

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
