At Thanksgiving dinner yesterday, my friends mother-law-law shared an interesting personal story. 30 years ago she sought help for her infertility. At some point she was offered a drug (don't know what it was) that was well publicized in the media at the time. The success rate was very poor, most resulted in multiple gestations that didn't make it past 25-27 weeks (viability probably being 30 weeks at best). When offered this option she said to the doctor "I have suffered the pain of not being able to conceive even one child, why in the world would I want to suffer the pain of loosing 4 or 5?" She declined the drug, of course, and adopted my friends husband.

I thought it was an admirable decision. What if this deeply religious couple had chosen to adopt seven unwanted children? I really have a difficult time with the outpouring of gifts and support as if this woman just accidently wound up with seven kids and golly we just need to help 'em out. This couple CHOSE to take the drugs and CHOSE to keep all seven. And thats fine, but did they PREPARE for all seven? I would be curious to know if they had bought baby equipment times seven, and had plans for more adequate housing, and were they both planning to work 2 jobs like the parents of the 6-pack? Betcha not. For heaven's sake what in the world were they thinking? As Geff pointed out, now we have the message ringing around the world that this OK...and worse yet, IMHO, that someone else will pay for it all!! Yuk.

We'll see how long Mr. McCaughey sustains that goofy grin once reality sets in.

Cynically yours,

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
