A 27 year old women complaining of abdominal pain has a transvaginal ultrasound scan. This shows a circular, bright, echogenic area in the right ovary 1.5 X 1.5 cm. The size of the ovary is normal. Both ovaries show small peripheral follicles consistent with polycystic ovary syndrome. No other abnormality on scan. The appearance of the ovary has persisted on a second scan 6 months later. The radiologist queries an early dermoid. Any other suggestions ?
