When I used to post on the menopause newsgroup I made a similar statement and was flamed beyond belief. It seems impossible to the "Anti-hyterectomy" crowd that a large number of women present to their physician each year literally demanding a hysterectomy, regardless of the degree of pathology. I've recently had a number of new patients come in wanting a hysterectomy for such things as "I'm tired of having (normal) periods" and "it's not bothering me, but I'm done with my uterus and would like you to take it out before it causes any problems down the road." I feel that major surgery in the absence of reasonable pathology (and yes, it's the patient, not me, that decides how bad her symptoms are) is unwise. Perhaps if the media actually polled women about their thoughts on hysterectomy they would see that many of us perform far fewer hysterectomies than we could. The "doctor bashing" about hysterectomies is very out of place. Ashley D. Ashley Hill,M.D. dahmd@gate.net Orlando, FL

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
