Garry,

I have been a CNM for 21 years--15 in the military and 6 in a private OB practice.

While it is true many women do specifically request female providers, the majority are willing to meet the provider and re-evaluate after they see how comfortable they are to him/her. During my 21 years of practice I have met and worked with male and female providers who were both caring and sensitive. I have also worked with many female providers who were rough and uncaring. It is not the sex that matters--it is the person. I have even worked with a couple of male nurse-midwives who were outstanding!

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
