my 74-year old patient using the silastic plugs is satisfied though the expense ($1-3 depending on volume purchased) of the disposable q4-6 hrs plugs limits their use to when she is away from home and wants to avoid "accidents." i know of other, younger patients who are happy with the ring (looks like a ring pessary with two horns sticking up at a 75 degree angle from the ring and in theory elevate and support the proximal urethra), though its cost of $300+ makes others reluctant to try. it may be less than a year's worth of pads and "depends" but still is an up front expense. whether its shape and material justify its cost over the smith-hodge, i don't know. cf j endourology v 10 no 3 june 96 p293

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
