IUD - Cuban home made

Many years ago, a patient from Cuba asked me to remove her IUD that was inserted many years previously. She told me IUD's were not permitted in Cuba then, and so this one was hand made and inserted without much difficulty. No problems for years, but now that she was in the US, she wanted the pill. I inserted an IUD hook, felt the IUD but it wouldn't budge. Under general anesthesia and with considerable force, the IUD was removed intact.

It was a rather good sized coil of ordinary monofilament fishing line with each end wrapped radially around the coil and tied. (Exactly like a coil of rope).

Wished I saved it. Can't imagine insertion.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
