Dear Margie, Lighten up and don't take things so seriously. I have some questions: 1. Are you a nurse? If you are, did you NEVER, EVER have silly discussions about patients at 3am? If you are and you didn't, you are "better" than ANY nurse, doctor, or midwife I have ever met in my >20 years experience. 2. Have you EVER relied on your "gut instinct" to manage or assist a patient? See number 1. 3. How was my post demeaning to women? I said that it was to lighten the day. I do not, and have not, demeaned humans of any type... including publicly chastising them. 4. Do you think that all of our short, obese, small-footed women got sectioned? They did not... we were NOT making assumptions about their abilities. My hospital had an 11% section rate, peaked at 22%(pre-VBACs), and now runs about 18% due to an increase overall in high-risk populations. 5. Do you think that I have never had a patient surprise me or give birth to a big baby? One of my fondest memories is my 4'10", 121 lb. at 42 weeks, size 5 shoe, Bradley-prepared patient birthing a 12.5 lb, 9/10 Apgar boy over an intact (yes, I massaged it for about 2 hours) perineum. And, yes, I know about genetics. 6. I'm sorry that my response broke your "heart and spirit" about hospitals throughout the country. Do you only do home births?

I'm glad that you sat on a hospital committee that produced a birthing room in 1978, the year of my first C/S. My hospital, that terrible place where we joked (and still do) in the dark of the night, had already had one for 4 years. If becoming a midwife takes away your sense of humor under the guise of increasing your humanity, perhaps I should withdraw from my Master's in Midwifery program now!!!

I apologize both for venting and for the length of this response to all my listmates, Margie's address did not work for me. Thanks to all of you who recognized the humor and wrote me privately as well as all of you who wrote to provide me support after Margie's response. Margie-- if you choose to continue this discussion with me, please e-mail me privately. I do not wish to continue this on the list or on my work address. Thank you. The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
