Paula, relax, he is not serious. You need to appreciate the sense of humor
that Dr. Klein, the founder and "moderator" of this list has. His proposal
was a dig at Dr. Wooley, who thinks that obstetricians practice medicine
according to experiences rather than based on research. Ron

I am a new member of the listserve and have been reading the comments with
interest. I am always amazed that the lowering of health care must rest on
the head of the patient. Do away with the specialties and you may possibly
see a reduction in medical costs initially. MAYBE. I am not convinced.
Where will the cost rise? In lawsuits, med mal cases will skyrocket, of
this I am sure. Patients will have to bear the burden of "reducing medical
costs" by putting their personal safety on the line.
What is scary is that this is the type of suggestion that I hear in the
hospitals by administrators that would not know a patient if they tripped
over one. Cut costs!!! Reduce the nursing staff and replace with
unlicensed
assistive personnel. Why do we need specialists? Lets take the
housekeepers
from their cleaning duties and train them to provide patient care in a two
week course. Let's take nurses and have them provide respiratory
treatments
to patients. Shoot, I've only seen a few patients harmed from such ideas
put
into practice. Well, practice is a great word. Perhaps if we had let
these
people practice a little longer on the patients, they may have become
better
at it. Are you willing to have your wife fall into the cracks of the
phasing
out of specialties? Your children. Well, the public should not and I hope
would not stand for this. Cut the costs by finding and exposing anyone
participating in fraudulent billng, illegal upgrading of complications,
charges for services not provided, and first!!! reduce the number and the
salary of the corporation and hospital administrators who reward the
reduction of patient care services to save a few almighty dollars.
