GASP Chromic for epis'sFrom: Arthurfree@aol.comFri Jun 27 15:58:40 1997
<< < As to your comments about the OB specialty - I think because of what we do <and the closeness birth is to God /the Great Mother Goddess / or whatever, <those that choose OB (whether they realize it or not) do use intuitive <experience and knowledge in their medical assessments and decisions. I think I am agreeing with you (with much less reliance on mystery!) when I observe that obstetrics is so loaded with normalcy that demonstrating any difference in outcome with an intervention is dastardly difficult. The flip side of that is that healthy pregnant women are so resilient that many of our practices that may not be of benefit are nevertheless well tolerated. <When the shit hits the fan at 2 AM in the delivery room and you are in a small <community hopsptital and ther is no one available for the next 10-20 <minutes, you don't go look something up - you rely on the scientifice <knowledge combined with every single experience you have had with similar <patients as well as everything you have discussed with others, a bit of <prayer to whoever then you go with it. <Joanne Bulley This is similar in most specialties. However, the one difference I've noted with many of the procedural specialties is a leaning toward more of a "guild" feeling. One tends to revere one's mentors and their opinions (I know I still call mine now and then to see how he's handling something new), so things change slowly. -Oh, and neither of us are very convinced there is anything significantly better than chromic for vaginal repair as yet! The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
