It really comes from the french centimètre. The one hundredth (hundred = cent) of a mètre. It comes from the french revolution when they decided to wipe out all the old rubbish that were feet and inches and pounds ASO. If my memory is good a meter is supposed to be the 40.000.000th of earth circonference.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit.
