The new technologies for cytology are not ridiculous. They do work. There are numerous article in the literature showing increased diagnois of 5-7 fold pick up for rescreening with computer technology. Thin prep has FDA approval to market as an improvement to the standard pap smear. The 2 questions to be answered are 1) do they decrease the incidense and death from cervical cancer. 2) in populations are they cost effective. Currently, they are not medically the standard of care in my opinion. If a patient requests rescreening I will sent. Disclaimer: I am on the speakers bureau for PAPNET and have been asked to be on the ThinPrep speakers bureau.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
