Closure of evisceration

Dear list,

An otherwise healthy 56 y/o who had undergone a hysterectomy for in situ cervical cancer a week ago, eviscerated when the nurse took off the stitches from the wound. She had complete exposure of intestines and was inmediately packed with sterile pads soaked with saline (it happened right in the hospital). The attending gynecologist ordered inmediate closure, but the anaesthesiologist prompted for a delay of a few hours because the pt had a heavy meal just an hour ago.

My question is: How soon should an abdominal evisceration like this one be closed? Is it ok to give the anaesthesiologist the few hours he asked?

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
