Apologies for the timing, I'm a little behind in the reading . . .

In a message dated 97-04-14 16:29:26 EDT, you write:

<< BTW, I think Susan Love is quite scary, a militant type that is spreading disinformation to a gullible populace (witness GNC stock performance...) >>

Dr. Love is a creature of her training and experience (as are we all). I believe, if I recall correctly that her training is in general surgery and over time she has gravitated to breast surgery only. Therefore the majority of the patients that she has seen suffer, she has seen suffer from breast cancer. When one of her patients has a heart attack or a hip fracture she is not the one who then cares for them. From this perspective, she has evidently decided that ANY increased risk of breast cancer is too much, no matter what the potential benefit.

This is a myopia that occurs often within our ranks (evidence: the dermatologist who states that the entire integument should be examined at any general medical visit; the opthalmologist who argues that the terminal cancer patient with only a few months suffering left deserves to spend a few hours and a couple thousand dollars getting a cataract removed to improve their quality of life; and the medical subspecialist who does the organ specific megaworkup to show that the patient's symptoms are not from his or her organ system rather than stating what the symptoms probably represent in the first place)

Someone correctly stated the problem earlier: When someone this focused becomes a spokesperson for the profession, patients are not well served. On the other hand, please do not doubt Dr. Love's motivation or compassion.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
