...the public views their licensure as some certification of skill and common sense when too often there is none. Not to mention the fact that lay midwives usually congregate in cities... I think licensing this activity in the name of competition is wrong. In the name of quality care it's wrong. In fact it's just plain wrong. Don't do it.

Resepectfully, all major studies EVER done (see the lit) support the = -------------------------------- fact that trained lay midwives (ie, pass a licensure exam, = -------------------------------- apprentice, etf) have as good or better stats in out of hospital settings than obs do in hospital. The morbidity/mortality rates are lower in comparable pregnancies, the midwives frequentlky do a better job of risk reduction management, score higher in perceived quality of care (time element and rapport development count a lot here). I've heard physicians say that if one of the midwives they backed up lost a baby, they were convinced that they, too would have lost it. There are rotten apples in every barrel, my friend. Pluck them out and go on. Don't sacrifice the benefits of utilizing the rest for the well-being of community maternal-child health. Find a good midwife in your area and give her some support.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
