Endometrial ablation

From: Arthurfree@aol.com --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ........... About six months after the procedure, she began --------------------------------------------------------------------------- having light, short menstrual periods again. At the time of the --------------------------------------------------------------------------- procedure, she had been reassured that she would NEVER (hate that word) need contraception again.

Question: Since this lady obviously has some functional endometrial tissue, does she need effective contraception at this point?

Arthur Freeland, MD Warrensburg Missouri ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Reply: --------------------------------------------------------------------------- This patient definitely needs effective contraception. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

I believe that most of the ablation experts recommend that a tubal be performed at the time of endometrial ablation, unless, of course, she already has a tubal.

I am not aware of case reports of pregnancy after ablations, but the potential complications are numerous.

I would recommend a tubal to this patient.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
