Endometrial ablation

I must confess this is a relatively new intervention to a rural, therapeutically conservative FP such as myself, so I've taken care of relatively few patients who have had an endometrial ablation. A new patient to me (urban refugee, you know!) was in the office this week who had had an endometrial ablation for menorrhagia two years ago and has been relatively happy with the results. About six months after the procedure, she began having light, short menstrual periods again. At the time of the procedure, she had been reassured that she would NEVER (hate that word) need contraception again.

Question: Since this lady obviously has some functional endometrial tissue, does she need effective contraception at this point?

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
