Re: atypical HELLP vs. TTP (fwd) PAPERSFrom: rbraun@indyunix.iupui.eduWed Jan 15 21:35:39 1997
It is interesting that 3 of your 5 papers are from the same group at the U. of Mississippi. One was published in the NZ Journal (A study from Miss. in the New Zealand J ????) it looked retrospectively at 27 patients. The second article by that group, gave Dex to 20 postpartal women and had 20 postpartal controls. There 3rd paper was indeed an RCT. It looked at 12 study patients and 13 controls. The article from Israel is about TTP. The last article from Memphis looked retrospectively at 112 patients over 8 years. Only 17 of htose got steroids?????? Those patient did no better than the ones who didn't. So of these 5 papers 3 are about antenatal steroid admin to HELLP patients. Two retrospective analyses (1 pro and 1 con) and One small RCT which was pro. Since most of the patients I see with HELLP are remote from term, they will get steroids to promote lung maturity and prevent IVH. If they are at term Mag 'em and deliver 'em and they will get well. Just like "Build it and they will come"

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
