I now do the majority of deliveries left lateral, but it doesn't keep me from breaking the bed and moving to dorsal lithotomy to do a quick vaginal exam while awaiting the placenta. I hate surprises!

I usually use the rings as a sponge forcep to sweep the vaginal tissues to the side and elevate the cervix as well as to keep me from "walking" the cervix. The only time I've seen a postpartum cervical exam add morbidity is from grasping the edematous cervix with rings and causing a bleeding laceration.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
