PAP Smear after TAHFrom: Ed Uthman (uthman@neosoft.com)Tue Dec 31 22:11:27 1996
Pathologists are probably the worst people to ask about the value of Pap smears vis-a-vis the cost to society, because we have seen horrible examples of every oddball low-incidence catastrophe one can think of. In my Pap practice, I see several cases of post-hyst vaginal cancers and high-grade SILs every year. When I have had the data available, none that I can recall had hysts for any neoplasm or SIL. I think it is curious that we beat our breasts over ther cost of Paps, when a Pap costs less than a date at the movies. Also, to put things into perspective, think of how much more money we waste on contingencies that are many times less common than vaginal cancer in post-hyst women. For instance, it has been calculated that the nationwide program of asbestos removal costs $250,000,000 for each life saved. That's a lot of Paps. So I say keep doing the Paps. Just don't send 'em to me. I have more than enough already. ;) Ed

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
