L&D practicesFrom: H.C.Holmes, MD (chp1hch@chp10.med.navy.mil)Tue Dec 31 14:05:05 1996
Greetings, my name is Har Holmes and I am an OB/GYN at Navy Hospital, Cherry Point. My practices are almost identical to the original posting. Exceptions, I usually don't admit until 4-5cm dilation and I admit all PROM. Tests ordered are the CBC, UA (for protein mainly) and T&S. Everyone gets external fetal monitoring, internals used on a case by case basis. I have read lots on intermitent monitoring but doesn't this require 1:1 nursing (read expensive)? Everyone gets an IV but allt he rooms have bathrooms in them so being tied to an IV isn't that difficult. I try to have the patients void by themselves and not use bedpans/catheters. Our delivery pack is quite simple and I only use a buttocks drape (keeps the bed a little cleaner). No episiotomies so no suture is automatically pulled (wasted) unless needed. Post partum stays are usually 24 hours only and 48 hours for c/s. This is a smaller community size hospital with about 500 deliveries a year.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
