FW: FW: entertainment/Routine Sonograms ?

Do any of you know if these folks are actually working with physicians, and if so, what is the relationship? It seems to be spreading rapidly. You realize that if this continues, SDMS members will all flock to it because it is so lucrative. I've been tempted. I prefer to do real health care. However, if this is going to be the way the public and FDA want this done, then I would say few would be any better qualified than my self to do obstetrical sonography in any situation. My point is not to be immodest, but to ask the question, Do we need to face reality and just say it is OK? Let's get some discussion of this and some consensus. Karen Ophir, RDMS in Houston tells me the *Womb With a View* folks that were shut down 2-3 years ago by the TX Health Dept. are back in operation, (remember the Wall Street Journal frontpage article?). I'm not sure if there was any resolution to the situation. The FDA's position is that most of the offenders are now fitting into their requirements, which is somewhat surprising. There have been newspaper and magazine articles touting this as viable small business money making deal. At the same time, we and the rest of our fellow legit sonographers and even OB docs need to limit the amount of scanning time done on mothers and limit frivolous scanning of hospital staff and friends to see sex, etc. Marveen Craig and Sandra Karol would probably be able to give you a good idea on progress in this situation. I know the entertainment sonographers have banded together into a loose organization to try and get some respect and maybe even some relaxation of requirements. As I said, the sonographer here in Wichita who does it (Baby Waves company), has a silent partnership with the OB doctors, so they have a big interest in it and refer their patients for this procedure. I can see why - its all cash - $75 worth. No overhead and no insurance woes. She even advertises on the radio and is a co-sponsor at huge women's fairs - so you know she's making serious $$. The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
