<< Our sterilizer is breaking down. We are looking at ways to avoid having to sterilize speculums. One place I worked simply cleaned the specs carefully and dropped them into a bleach solution overnight, rinsed them in the morning and used them.

The other alternative is plastic specs. I hate them, but may have to go that route. What do you do? Looking for some cost effective alternative >>

You are going to have to purchase a new sterilizer. How else will you do sterile speculum exams to r/o ROM? We changed to plastic speculums because of increasing patient requests. I definitely prefer metal ones. They go in more easily and never accidently have a sharp edge. We did the cleaning and bleach routine and then sterilized them.

We use BARD plastic speculums. They are not as esthetic or ergonomic in their design as the Welch Allen models but they are $0.58 each vs a $1.63 for the Welch Allen models. They do the job well enough and come in three sizes. Hope this helps.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
